AMD To Release New CPU’s

From PCWorld:

“After launching Phenom, AMD will offer a high-end Phenom FX (in one or two quad-core chips), Phenom X4 and Phenom X2 (in quad-core and dual-core), Athlon X2 and Sempron.”

I’m excited for the new Phenom chips and I want to see how they will match up to Intel’s superb Core 2 Duo chips.

NAS (Network Attached Storage) Device

I found this highly recommended NAS hard drive for backup and storage purposes. Check it out:

LaCie NAS Drive

You can connect this drive to your router or switch on your home network and it will configure to a specific private IP address. Then you can use the massive 500GB drive to backup data, music, pictures or your entire computer! Very cool stuff. I recommend Acronis for your software solution as well. Enjoy!

How To: Get Songs Off Your iPod

A family member’s laptop recently crashed.  This person didn’t have any backups at all.  They had iTunes installed with a bunch of music that they lost due to the crash.  Here’s how to get songs off your iPod if this happens to you:

1.) Enable your iPod for Disk Use – Connect your iPod and iTunes should open up.  If you’re running the newest version of iTunes you’ll see an option for enabling disk use.  Click it and OK the warning message.  Then at the bottom right, click Apply.  Alternatively you can right-click on your iPod in the menu on the left and click on iPod Options, you can also use to enable disk use.

2.)  Now you can leave iTunes open or close it.  Alternatively you can close iTunes, disconnect your iPod and then reconnect it for assurance.  Once it’s connected open My Computer.  On the Tools menu click Folder Options.  On the View tab find the option for Show Hidden Files and Folders and select it.  Apply the option and close out.

3.)  You should be able to open up My Computer now and see your iPod listed as a disk.  Could be something like “Joe’s IPOD (F:)

4.)  Once you’ve navigated to your iPod you’ll see a dimmed folder called “iPod_Control” open that.  Click on the folder Music and you’ll see a bunch of folders like F00, F01, F02 etc.  These folders contain all of your music files.  Copy them to your hard drive and you should be all good.

5.)  Once the files are on your hard drive, import them back into iTunes and you’ve got your music back!

Thanks for CNET for this.

New Fastest AMD Dual Core

AMD has released their fastest X2 processor to date. It’s the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ @ 3.0GHz with 2 x 1MB L2 Cache and Socket AM2 architecture. This thing will run fast and hot, but if you have the bucks and the need for speed, you’d better check it out:

IntelliPoint 6.1 Mouse Software

The new Microsoft IntelliPoint mouse software is available for download.  This enables access to many cuztomized features for different mice.  You can choose the type of mouse you have and then it will install the related package.  It’s free and works for Vista.

new computer specs

So after years of wishing and saving and hoping I could build my own computer I finally got the chance to do it in December 2006. I wanted to build a computer that was fully prepared to work with Vista premium and any type of Linux OS. Here’s the rundown of my rig:

  • AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ @ 2.4GHz
  • ASUS M2N-E ATX Socket AM2
  • XFX GeForce 6800XT 256MB 256Bit PCI-e x16 GPU
  • Corsair XMS2 1GB module of 240 Pin DDR2 RAM (will add a second soon)
  • Seagate Barracuda 320GB Hard Drive
  • Sony 16x DVD+RW Drive
  • LG 16X DVD+RW Drive
  • PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610Watt power supply
  • NZXT Apollo Orange ATX mid tower computer case

I spent just about $1,000 including tax and I purchased everything from Newegg.com, which was a great experience. They ship fast and secure. They have great selection and very low prices compared to anywhere else.

I’m getting Windows Vista Business edition for free from PowerTogether.com and it should arrive soon. I’m most likely going to dual boot either Fedora Core 6 (maybe Fedora 7) or Ubutntu 6.10 on it as well. Should be good times. I think the combination of Linux and Windows gives me all of the functionality and versatility I need to get everything done.

I really enjoy this system, it’s really fast with the dual core AMD chip. Running Vista RC1 or Ubuntu on this thing is just sick. My rating on Vista is 4.5 only because they take the lowest sub-score and I only have 1GB of RAM. If I had 2GB it would be at least a perfect 5/5. The motherboard runs great and all of my components work very smoothly together. And they should, I spent months getting feedback and researching just the right parts to buy.

You can view my pictures of my computer on my Flickr photos on my sidebar. Enjoy!
