iTunes 7.2, Firefox 2.0.0.4, & Live Messenger 8.5

iTunes version 7.2 is now released.  This version has lots of bug fixes, Vista compatibility, and support for DRM free music in the music store!  Very cool.

You can also download the new security update for Firefox which is version 2.0.0.4.  It will be pushed via automatic updates soon.

You can get a Beta version of the new Windows Live Messenger version 8.5 here.  Looks really cool in Vista.

Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin

This is a really cool plugin installation for Firefox that installs a comprehensive WMP plugin set.  It will make Firefox and Windows Media work very well together.  Check out the download below, it takes just a few seconds.

Mozilla’s New Add-Ons Site!

Mozilla has finally updated their add-ons site with a new look and better functionality.  The number of extensions and themes have been dramatically reduced so that the quality of extensions and themes can be upheld.  So only the themes and extensions that Mozilla deems of high quality will appear on the site.

The left-hand sidebar has more links now for better navigation and the search feature is at the top of the page so you can easily find what  you’re looking for.  There’s also a cool little picture preview feature they’ve added.

Enjoy finding new add-ons!

Firefox 2.0.0.3 and OpenOffice 2.2

Well it looks like you can now download the new security update to Firefox 2.0.0.3.  Mozilla had to release this quickly because of some stubborn security risks that remained in 2.0.0.2.  You can get the new version here:

Download Firefox Setup 2.0.0.3

Also on the OpenOffice front, they updated their wiki yet again to display a potential release date of March 28th.  You can download the 4th RC here:

Firefox 2.0.0.3 to 2.0.0.4

Mozilla is going to very quickly release an update to 2.0.0.3 because of some high security threats that were left behind for 2.0.0.2.  They plan to have builds available on Wednesday.  The next regular security/stability update will be 2.0.0.4.

Download Videos from YouTube

I just got back from my Red Hot Chili Peppers concert in Champaign, IL and I decided I wanted to keep the videos people are now posting on YouTube and Google Video etc. So I found an extension for Firefox and a relevant video player for my computer to accomplish that! The extension is called VideoDownloader and installs easily and is very easy to use. The video player is an FLV Player.

Here’s how it works, install the VideoDownloader extension for Firefox, then go to YouTube and click on a favorite video. In the bottom right hand status bar of Firefox you’ll see a little icon that you can click on. It’ll bring up a window with a button that says “Download Link” RIGHT CLICK on this button, and erase the given file name, i.e. get_video.htm…

Type in a new file name and add “.flv” at the end (no quotes) i.e. chilipeppers.flv then click save. It will download the file with an FLV file extension to your computer.

To play the file, install the FLV player and it will work its magic for you, very easy to use as well. Enjoy!

The Future of Firefox 3.0

Mozilla is currently developing Firefox 3.0 and is claiming it will be released by the end of 2007. The new browser will include a host of new features that will likely delight the Mozilla fan base. The major updates to the browser are also considered the most important and will be speed enhancements and full web standards compliance.

A few other features likely to be included in the release:

  • A new database based history and bookmarking system called “Places”
  • A new graphics rendering engine called “Cairo” based on Gecko 1.9
  • Innovative offline support
  • Improved interaction with add-ons
  • Better printing support
  • Enhanced security and stability
  • A better crash reporting tool

I think these features along with any others Mozilla ends up incorporating into the new browser will continue to make Firefox a better browser than IE 7. I like IE 7 but it just doesn’t compare to how powerful and innovative Firefox is.

“Places” and the underlying database for cache and bookmarks should be really exciting. It’s supposed to give bookmarks a more dynamic nature. Bookmarks could be sorted based on popularity or frequency of access.

My Favorite Firefox Add-Ons

1.) Del.icio.us Extension – this is an extension you can install to give you easy access to your online bookmarks via del.icio.us. Very cool and it makes it so simple to tag a page (control+shift+/) and view your bookmarks with the del.icio.us icon button. Check it out.

2.) Firefox Showcase – this extension lets your add the functionality of IE 7′s awesome “Quick Tabs” feature. Showcase allows you to view all of your open tabs in a single window and allows you to then choose the tab you’d like to focus on. Very cool feature from IE 7 now easily available for Firefox (which is why extensions rock!).

3.) FireFTP – this allows you to connect to various FTP sites with an awesome and simple interface within Firefox. Check it out!

4.) Greasemonkey – this allows you to customize the web in ways you might not be able to imagine, highly recommended.

5.) FavLoc – allows you to set favorite download folders so you can easily download files into different directories!

6.) DownThemAll! – installs a much needed download manager.

All of the Firefox Recommended Add-ons are awesome as well and I suggest you check them out to add much needed functionality to Firefox. I don’t go overboard, for example right now I only have Del.icio.us and Showcase installed because I like to keep a few, stable extensions installed for stability and simplicity. I also just keep the classic Firefox 2 theme because most other themes are not good enough for me :)

Firefox Security Update and Plugins Fix

Mozilla has surprisingly updated both Firefox 2 & 1.5 with their new security updates. Firefox is updated to 2.0.0.2 & 1.5.0.10 with various security, stability, and Windows Vista enhancements. All users are encouraged to update in order to benefit from these. You can get Firefox here.

Another cool fix I found today was enabling Windows Media plugins in Firefox 2. I have had issues with WMP plugins and Firefox and now I’ve found the fix!

You basically have to copy three DLL’s into your plugins folder for Firefox (instructions below). Which is typically: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins

Windows Media Player – MozillaZine Plugin Instructions

DllDump – Download Free Plugin Files

Mozilla Links gets an Update!

The Mozilla Links site has received a facelift and now sports a new visual theme and some better features. Check it out! :)

Also, Firefox 2.0.0.2 should be out by Feb. 27th now.  This according to the wiki here.
