Make Ubuntu Look Like OS X

Sorry there haven’t been updates to this for a while but I’ll try to get back on it.  Here is an awesome way to make Ubuntu look like Mac OS X Tiger.  The site doesn’t tell you quite how to do everything, but it gives you all of what you need to do it.  Very cool stuff.

How To: Get Songs Off Your iPod

A family member’s laptop recently crashed.  This person didn’t have any backups at all.  They had iTunes installed with a bunch of music that they lost due to the crash.  Here’s how to get songs off your iPod if this happens to you:

1.) Enable your iPod for Disk Use – Connect your iPod and iTunes should open up.  If you’re running the newest version of iTunes you’ll see an option for enabling disk use.  Click it and OK the warning message.  Then at the bottom right, click Apply.  Alternatively you can right-click on your iPod in the menu on the left and click on iPod Options, you can also use to enable disk use.

2.)  Now you can leave iTunes open or close it.  Alternatively you can close iTunes, disconnect your iPod and then reconnect it for assurance.  Once it’s connected open My Computer.  On the Tools menu click Folder Options.  On the View tab find the option for Show Hidden Files and Folders and select it.  Apply the option and close out.

3.)  You should be able to open up My Computer now and see your iPod listed as a disk.  Could be something like “Joe’s IPOD (F:)

4.)  Once you’ve navigated to your iPod you’ll see a dimmed folder called “iPod_Control” open that.  Click on the folder Music and you’ll see a bunch of folders like F00, F01, F02 etc.  These folders contain all of your music files.  Copy them to your hard drive and you should be all good.

5.)  Once the files are on your hard drive, import them back into iTunes and you’ve got your music back!

Thanks for CNET for this.

iTunes 7.2, Firefox 2.0.0.4, & Live Messenger 8.5

iTunes version 7.2 is now released.  This version has lots of bug fixes, Vista compatibility, and support for DRM free music in the music store!  Very cool.

You can also download the new security update for Firefox which is version 2.0.0.4.  It will be pushed via automatic updates soon.

You can get a Beta version of the new Windows Live Messenger version 8.5 here.  Looks really cool in Vista.

The Versatile VLC Media Player

There’s a really cool media player that’s becoming more and more popular everyday. It’s called the VLC Media Player and it runs on Linux, Mac, and Windows including Windows Vista. It’s a versatile player that can play almost any audio or video content including but not limited to: DVD, VCD, MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4, DivX, MP3, ogg and more.

What I love about it is that it actually plays my DVD’s on Vista. I could not do this before because my copy of Vista Business does not come with a built in DVD decoder like the Ultimate edition does. So now I can do anything with optical media using all free software, and I’ve detailed it all on this blog various times. So check it out!

Make Ubuntu Look Like OS-X

I’ve been using Ubuntu Edgy for a while now and I love it more and more everyday.  I’ve never had a Mac before either and since I’m delving into so much new computing atmosphere I thought I’d make my Linux partition feel like OS-X for fun.  So I looked it up and found this great website on how to actually make Ubuntu look very much like OS-X and it really does look cool.  Check it out below!

iTunes and Firefox for Vista

Apple is working on making iTunes 7 compatible and stable for Windows Vista in the next few weeks so watch out for that.  I also have issues with Quicktime so hopefully they fix that too…

Also, Firefox 2.0.0.2 should be more compatible and stable for Vista as well.  I’ve never had an issue with Fx and Vista and I’ve been running both for quite sometime.  Either way I’m glad they’re working on it.

New Mac Stuff…

If you’re a Mac user (which some of my friends are) you’ll enjoy this. Apple is releasing an update to OS X called Leopard (10.5) and it will have some cool new features that Mac lovers will enjoy. My favorites are:

1.) Spaces – this is kind of like what comes with Linux distributions. You can have 4 different desktops all operating at the same time to better organize your applications. Excellent addition!

2.) Time Machine – you can go back in time and find files that you’ve deleted and need back. Not just files from the finder, but anything on your system can be recovered!

3.) Boot Camp Included – Boot Camp lets you run Windows and OS X simultaneously – rock on!

Here’s a link to the Apple site for Leopard so check that out to explore videos and more information.
