How to Enable TraceMonkey on Firefox 3.1

Hey I have noticed some major misconceptions about the speed of the nightly builds of Firefox 3.1  Some reviewers have attempted to compare Firefox 3.1 with other browsers like Chrome and have come up with unexpected results.  This is mostly due to the individuals NOT enabling TraceMonkey (the new JavaScript engine) in Firefox 3.1.  You HAVE to enable TraceMonkey in order to get the increased speed it provides.  Here’s how you do it, courtesy of the Mozilla Wiki:

“Playing with TraceMonkey

TraceMonkey is currently available for testing in nightly builds. You will need to go take the following steps to turn it on:

  • open a new tab
  • type about:config and hit enter
  • read the warning and heed its wisdom
  • enter jit in the filter field
  • double click on javascript.options.jit.chrome and javascript.options.jit.content to change their values to true

If you experience instability, please file a bug and reference any crash report ID that might be relevant.”

Time to Move to a MacBook?

So I know I have not written any posts here for a while.  But a lot has changed since then and things are better.  I’ll have some time now and then to write a few thoughts.

The biggest news since my last posting is I was given a MacBook as a gift.  It’s the base white MacBook before the announcements of the new models late 2008.  It came stock with a 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, 1GB of RAM, and a 120GB hard drive.  Plus all the built in goodies from Apple, 802.11n, iLife etc.

I immediately upgrade my RAM and HD to 4GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive.  I wouldn’t have it any other way, plus I got some great deals on NewEgg.com.

I would say that the quality of both the hardware from Apple as well as the software is amazing.  I’m a lifelong Windows user so OS X was pretty foreign to me when I got my Mac.  I have to say, it’s an amazing OS and I truly see why so many people love it.  It’s not perfect though, and no OS is perfect.  All operating systems have their faults.  I think that if you’d like to run Windows on a Mac though, you’ve made the right choice.  With boot camp, you get a native Windows Vista or XP experience and I am loving it.  The quality of the MacBook is astounding and I give Apple major credit for that.  You can tell they put a lot of hard work into this thing.

Basically, if you’re in the market for a new laptop, I’d seriously consider buying a MacBook.  If you want to learn OS X you can, if you want to partition most of your drive for Windows and only run Windows you can.  But you’re not going to find a better machine than this out there right now.  Go for it.
