Vista Glass on Firefox 3

For all you people who have been looking for a way to get Vista’s glass effect in Firefox, look no further. Here is an extension for Firefox 3 that will do it. Please read this entire article before install this extension.

THIS IS ALPHA QUALITY

This extension is alpha quality, I whipped it together quickly.
In the javascript file I used a portion of the code from the MinimizeToTray extension. It’s license stands for that portion that I am aware of.

Known Issues

It will work on the Vista Basic theme, but will not produce the blue toolbars as Windows Explorer does, this will still a work in progress.

Install

Download: Glasser Installer (XPI)

To install Glasser, first download the file, then drag and drop it to your Firefox window.

If you want the Windows Explorer style background on the personal toolbar, use this css file. You can install it with either the Stylish Add-on, or by edit your userChrome.css file.

If you want to remove the menu-bar, try either Personal Menu or Hide Menubar. Both support using the Alt key to temperately show the menu-bar and Personal Menu lets you keep a button on the toolbar to gain access to the menus.

Favorite Firefox 3 Extensions

One of my favorite Firefox extension writers is Josep del Rio.  He writes two of the best Firefox extensions and incidentially they are available for the nightly builds of Firefox 3.  Two of his popular extensions are Firefox Showcase and Speed Dial.

Showcase is the Firefox version of the IE Quick Tabs feature.  It allows you to view and manage all of your tabs in an easy to use interface.

Speed Dial is way to easily access all of your most visited web sites.  This is comparable to the similar feature in the Opera Web Browser.

The addition of these extensions to Firefox 3 have made my web browsing experience better and gives me more and more incentive to never use IE unless absolutely necessary.  I hope you find them useful as well.

New Phenom X4 CPUs Debut

The final stepping revision (B3) of the Phenom X4 processors have been released on NewEgg.  The new processors from AMD have a xx50 model numbering scheme meaning that the dreaded TLB bug in the original Phenom CPUs is now entirely fixed.  If you have been waiting to upgrade to Phenom, now is the time.  The prices are right and the performance is perfect.  Although these processors are arguably not as fast as their comparable Intel Core 2 rivals, if you have an AMD motherboard or you are just a fan of AMD, this is your best bet for high performance computing power.  I am going to buy one right away!!

Phenom 9550 2.2Ghz

Phenom 9750 2.4 Ghz

Phenom 9850 Black Edition 2.5 Ghz

*Also a quick note, you MUST have an AM2/AM2+ socket AMD motherboard WITH a very recent BIOS upgrade from your motherboard manufacturer that officially supports Phenom CPUs.  If you do not have this BIOS upgrade for your particular motherboard, you could see strange, poor, or no performance from the chip.  Be sure to look into it on the website of your motherboard.

The Essence of Subnetting

I’ve been working on my Cisco CCNA certification lately and I’ve been really getting into the practice of subnetting now that I have all of the concepts and fundamentals down pat.  Here’s the bottom line, the subnet mask is your key to everything.  The subnet mask rules all.  There is no difference in difficulty between subnetting a class A address or a class C address.  The subnet mask is the only thing that matters.  Here’s what I mean:

Random IP Address:  157.142.254.117

Random Subnet Mask:  255.255.0.0

We want to know the network address and the broadcast address from this information.  Here’s how I’d figure this out:

  • First realize that this is NOT subnetted at all!
  • The first two octets remain the same, and the second two octets default to subnet ID’s and broadcast IDs.

Network address:  157.142.0.0

Broadcast Address:  157.142.255.255

The broadcast address means that all bits in the broadcast portion are turned on, or are 1′s.  Therefore, in this case, all octets after the first two (determined by the subnet mask) are 255.

Okay that was relatively easy.  Let’s do something different:

Random IP Address:  21.149.6.207

Random Subnet Mask:  248.0.0.0

  • First thing to do: realize that because the first octet in the subnet mask is not 255, we are subnetting it.  This means we care about the first octet for our purposes.  21 in this case.
  • The subnet mask says 248, and that’s a /29 in slash notation, and it is also an 8 in the binary table.  8 is our “magic number”
  • Now we need to determine where our 21 fits into the binary table so we can figure out what set of usable hosts it fits into.  21 is inbetween 16 and 32 on the binary table in steps of 8 (magic number)
  • So we start at 16 and count in steps of 8, the next number is 24.  21 is inbetween 16 and 24 now so we can determine our final addresses.
  • The subnet ID is going to be 16 because this is the lowest network ID below 21.
  • The broadcast is going to be 23 because this is the next broadcast number below 24

Subnet ID:  16.0.0.0

Broadcast:  23.255.255.255

This information on subnetting is really a reminder for me.  Feel free to take what you can from it.  I might clean it up later.  Also, here’s a few pages that might help out as well:

Windows 7 Coming Soon??

This was on a few tech blogs today.  I highly doubt that we’ll see Windows 7 until 2010, so don’t believe this hype for now.

“Now, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates’ words are being parsed for hidden meanings. According to my News.com colleague Ina Fried, Gates said this week during a speech before the Inter-American Development Bank: “Sometime in the next year or so we will have a new (Windows) version.”
