So after years of wishing and saving and hoping I could build my own computer I finally got the chance to do it in December 2006. I wanted to build a computer that was fully prepared to work with Vista premium and any type of Linux OS. Here’s the rundown of my rig:
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ @ 2.4GHz
- ASUS M2N-E ATX Socket AM2
- XFX GeForce 6800XT 256MB 256Bit PCI-e x16 GPU
- Corsair XMS2 1GB module of 240 Pin DDR2 RAM (will add a second soon)
- Seagate Barracuda 320GB Hard Drive
- Sony 16x DVD+RW Drive
- LG 16X DVD+RW Drive
- PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610Watt power supply
- NZXT Apollo Orange ATX mid tower computer case
I spent just about $1,000 including tax and I purchased everything from Newegg.com, which was a great experience. They ship fast and secure. They have great selection and very low prices compared to anywhere else.
I’m getting Windows Vista Business edition for free from PowerTogether.com and it should arrive soon. I’m most likely going to dual boot either Fedora Core 6 (maybe Fedora 7) or Ubutntu 6.10 on it as well. Should be good times. I think the combination of Linux and Windows gives me all of the functionality and versatility I need to get everything done.
I really enjoy this system, it’s really fast with the dual core AMD chip. Running Vista RC1 or Ubuntu on this thing is just sick. My rating on Vista is 4.5 only because they take the lowest sub-score and I only have 1GB of RAM. If I had 2GB it would be at least a perfect 5/5. The motherboard runs great and all of my components work very smoothly together. And they should, I spent months getting feedback and researching just the right parts to buy.
You can view my pictures of my computer on my Flickr photos on my sidebar. Enjoy!
