Windows Vista is now Available Everywhere!

Windows Vista is finally here.  If you were planning on upgrading your computer to the new version of Windows now is the time if you’re bold enough.  Some will wait until Service Pack 1 (SP1) is released later this year, but others like myself wanted to jump right in.  If you’d like some good reviews of Vista here you go:

Windows SuperSite

-Paul Thurrott’s review of Windows Vista is extensive and expert.  He’s been following Vista forever and he knows pretty much everything there is to know about the new OS – highly recommended.

ActiveWin

-ActiveWin’s review is rather extensive as well and they do a great job as well getting right down to it.

CyberNet News

-CyberNet did an overview review that works really well to just get the basic information across.  He has a lot of screenshot as well.  So enjoy!

Also here’s the prices for the different Windows Vista versions.  The first set of prices are full version retail prices.  The second set of prices are retail upgrade prices and the final set of prices are full version OEM prices:

Retail Full Version; (Retail Upgrade); [OEM]

Vista Home Basic – $199 ($99) [$95]

Vista Home Premium – $239 ($159) [$120]

Vista Business – $299 ($199) [$150]

Vista Ultimate -$399 ($259) [$200]

New Windows Vista Website

Microsoft has redesigned their Vista website.  The new site boasts a Vista-like menu bar and a ton of information regarding the new OS.  I particularly enjoy the section about the Top 100 reasons to upgrade!  Check it out, there’s lots to explore. :)

Paint.NET Final Version Available

The guru’s at Microsoft have released the final version of Paint.NET. It truly is an awesome image editor and has the abilities of Photoshop, only it’s free. You can check out the download below, enjoy!

The Battle of the Top 10

There is a battle of the blogs right now to determine the Top 10 Reasons to either get or not get Windows Vista, here’s my favorite Top 10 to get it:

PCWorld

APC

BTX

There’s a lot of reasons for both sides.  Some people should not upgrade to Vista yet and are better off waiting until SP1.  I love the bleeding edge though… :)

Enhance IE 7.0 with cool features!

I just discovered this website called EnhanceIE.com and it rocks! Just click on the Add-Ons link in the top left menu bar and you can add some much needed functionality to IE7 like:

  • IESpell – This is an add-on that allows you to spell-check blogging posts and other dimensions of your browser including email messages!
  • Inline Search – just like in Firefox! You can search for a string of text anyone on your page, very cool!
  • Feeds Plus – a great way to manage RSS on IE7 – this one is really cool as well.

New Mozilla Stuff…

Mozilla is working on their updates to Firefox.  Fx 2.0.0.2 should be out by the end of the week if all goes well.  And they are also planning Fx 1.5.0.10.  I recommend that users upgrade to Firefox 2 to get the best experience possible.

Thunderbird 2 is on its way as well and I’ll keep you up to date on how that progress is going.

Firefox 3.0 with the new Gecko rendering engine should be out sometime late this year and hopefully we’ll see a huge leap in new features to distance itself from Firefox 2.  I think Mozilla really wants to distance Firefox from IE7 as well because they know they can take advantage of the fact that they can update and patch Firefox much faster than Microsoft can to IE.

New Mac Stuff…

If you’re a Mac user (which some of my friends are) you’ll enjoy this. Apple is releasing an update to OS X called Leopard (10.5) and it will have some cool new features that Mac lovers will enjoy. My favorites are:

1.) Spaces – this is kind of like what comes with Linux distributions. You can have 4 different desktops all operating at the same time to better organize your applications. Excellent addition!

2.) Time Machine – you can go back in time and find files that you’ve deleted and need back. Not just files from the finder, but anything on your system can be recovered!

3.) Boot Camp Included – Boot Camp lets you run Windows and OS X simultaneously – rock on!

Here’s a link to the Apple site for Leopard so check that out to explore videos and more information.

I got my copy of Vista Business!

My free copy of Windows Vista Business came in the mail on Thursday and it’s pretty exciting.  I have now been able to fully test out the power of Vista Gold Code on my new computer and the combination is fantastic together.  All of my programs and files work perfectly together on the new stable code of RTM Vista and it’s nice to take advantage of the new OS.

It will take a few months to a year for software drivers/programs and hardware to be fully in compliance with Vista but when that happens it will really be running smoothly.  The only problem I’ve had is getting my DVD burner to work with some software but it will work out eventually.

My favorite features so far are the integrated desktop search, the new IE7,  all of the included software, ReadyBoost, the Aero interface, the new file system and shell interface, and the improved security and stability.

I’d say the OS comes out in 2 days but most people who aren’t tech savvy should wait until SP1 is out.   That’s all for now, I’ll be updating about Vista as I find out more information and cool new features! :)
